According to world media, the Pontevedra Museum in north-western Spain will return two 15th-century paintings to Poland, after it was established that they were looted by the Nazis during World War II. Two paintings from the workshop of Dieric Bouts will go to the Castle in Gołuchów. The Dutch works “Mater Dolorosa” and “Ecce Homo”, from the Czartoryski Collection, found their way to home after many years.

In 1994, the Spanish museum bought it from a private collector. It was only in 2020 that Poland claimed the war loss, making the Spanish side aware that both works were taken away by the Nazis during the occupation of Poland. After completing the procedures, submitting applications and completing the documents, the Spaniards decided to return the lost treasure.

During World War II, Poland lost over half a million works of art. Currently, there are nearly 130 restitution processes in several countries around the world. The More Than Poland Foundation is actively involved in these activities. We search for lost works of art around the world. Collectors, art historians, museologists, antique shops and non-governmental organizations help us in this. We encourage students of art history and art majors from the Tri-City and Warsaw to join our action.
